6 Tips to Stay Fit Through the Holidays

Dec 12, 2023

With the holidays, comes eating AMAZING food, but how do we stay fit through the holidays?

It’s a question a lot of us have and want to know.

Between Thanksgiving and the month of December, I don’t want to lose the fitness progress that I have been working so hard on.

But I still want to enjoy all the food from the holiday parties and events I have coming up.

& I’m sure you do too!

So, for you I have tips on how to stay fit through the holidays!

Tip #1 Don’t Ditch Your Workouts

Even though it is getting cold as heck outside and is dark by like 4pm, we can’t ditch our weekly workouts.

Our workouts are what will help us THRIVE through the holidays.

We can eat more as long as we are still working out, right?

For this month, heck yes!

All laughs aside, we need to stick to our regular workout schedules.

Attend the workout class you go to every week.

Fit in your usual 10 minute walk on the treadmill.

Keep doing your YouTube workouts.

You got this!

Tip #2 Add in more exercise than usual

The food isn’t stopping and I am not here to tell you to not eat your favorite holiday meals and treats.

Because I definitely will be.

Add in an extra workout once a week to burn a few more calories & get your metabolism moving.

Park farther away from the grocery store to get in some more steps.

Add another 10 minute walk on the treadmill everyday.

This is a great way to be able to eat more than usual and also stay fit through the holidays.

Tip #3 Keep your mindset in tip top shape

Remember fitness and health is mental too.

Don’t beat yourself up after you eat a whole tin of cookies (you know it’s probably gonna happen).

It happens and it’s not forever.

Cookie and treat season is here but it isn’t here to stay.

Let yourself enjoy it and we will get back to healthy eating full time January 1st.

Tip #4 Add in healthy foods when you can

I know..

..nobody wants to eat healthy during the holidays

But that doesn’t mean we can’t add in a few healthy meals and snacks every now and then.

Put out a veggie tray with fresh cut vegetables and a yummy dip!

Everyone loves a good dip with vegetables.

(Even if it’s just the onion or ranch dip mixes you use with sour cream).

You can also use alternatives to make recipes a little healthier.

For example,

→ Cook with avocado oil instead of vegetable oil.

→ Use a little less sugar in desserts when you can.

→ Make things homemade instead of buying them.

There are plenty of ways to eat healthy while also eating “not healthy”.

We aren’t here for restriction anyway, so why start now?

Tip #5 Do some outdoor activities with your friends and family!

There are still plenty of outdoor things to do even as it gets cold out.

Build a snowman if you have enough snow!

(Hello those snowballs ain’t gonna roll themselves)

Bundle up and go on a nature walk at a local hiking spot.

Nothing is more beautiful than the trees and the ground covered in snow!

Go skiing or snowboarding if you have a mountain nearby.

That is a great way to get in exercise and enjoy the snow.

Round up a group and walk around your town and sing Christmas carols.

Get the steps in and exercise those lungs!

There are plenty of ways to stay fit throughout the holiday season that you can do with your friends and family.

Tip #6 Drink a lot of water!

Water is the holy grail when it comes to eating a lot of food, especially sugary and high calorie foods.

It dilutes the sugar in our blood streams while also helping flush out waste from our body.

Try consistently drinking 6-8 cups of water a day and also drinking it right after eating a meal or sweet treat.

Conclusion

The holidays don’t have to be where your fitness progress goes to die.

There are so many ways to stay fit through the holidays.
