The Importance of Sunscreen in the Fall & Winter Months
Dec 12, 2023Sunscreen in the fall & winter months is important too.
That’s right, I said it.
It doesn’t matter what month it is, the sun keeps shining.
& keeps damaging our precious skin.
As you can probably tell, I am a skincare lover.
I love preventative anti-aging skincare, specifically.
What is the purpose of sunscreen?
Sunscreen reduces the amount of UV exposure to the body.
This will:
→ Reduce any sun burn you might get
→ Reduce the risk of skin cancer
→ Prevent or reduce the amount of sun spots you could get as you age
→ Keep your skin looking healthy and youthful
→ Keeps the collagen in your skin from breaking down.
See?
There are so many benefits to wearing sunscreen!
What kind of sunscreen is best?
This is important.
Zinc oxide-based sunscreen is the best kind.
It is the safest for your skin.
Other chemicals like oxybenzone, avobenzone, homosalate, octinoxate, octocrylene, and octisalate have been known not to be good for your skin.
*Please avoid these chemicals in your sunscreen.*
What are some good sunscreen brands?
→ Blue Lizard (currently, I am using this brand!)
→ Cetaphil
→ CeraVe
→ Bare Republic
Be sure to read the ingredients and make sure that zinc oxide is an active ingredient.
Also, be aware that these sunscreen brands may leave a white cast.
This is because it is a mineral sunscreen and has good ingredients in it.
Don’t settle for non-mineral sunscreen just because it doesn’t have a white cast.
We don’t want any toxic chemicals going into our skin
& causing who knows what to happen.
*Blue Lizard face sunscreen has less of a white cast then it’s body sunscreen
Should you wear sunscreen everyday?
Absolutely, yes.
You should be wearing sunscreen everyday, even in the fall and winter months!
The sun is always shining beautifully but just because it’s fall or winter doesn’t mean the sun stops doing its damage.
Wearing sunscreen year round is super important not only for your health but also for the appearance and firmness of your skin as you age.
Sunscreen in the fall & winter months
As I said, as we head into the fall and winter months remember to continue applying your sunscreen daily.
Preventative anti-aging skincare is year round, ladies.
Sunlight easily penetrates through clouds, fog, and windows still causing damage to the skin.
The best thing to do is put your sunscreen on and stay out of the sun.
How often should sunscreen be reapplied?
Sunscreen should be reapplied at least every 2 hours.
Yes, that does mean you have to reapply over your makeup when you’re out and about.
It sucks, but it will be worth it in 10-20 years when we are healthy and look young as heck.
What SPF is best for the face?
SPF 30 or higher is recommended to protect the face.
They also make sunscreen specifically for the face so that it does not cause clogged pores or breakouts.
For example, Blue Lizard has a SPF 30 sunscreen specifically for the face.
I have not noticed any clogged pores or breakouts on my face from using it.
Definitely give it a try.
What are the side effects of sunscreen?
Sunscreens are not all made equal.
Like I mentioned earlier, not all sunscreen is healthy for you.
& everyone’s skin is different and reacts to products differently.
Be cautious when trying new sunscreen brands and monitor how your skin feels with it on.
Some side effects may include:
→ Acne
→ Rash on the skin
→ Stinging or burning of the skin
→ Itching of the skin
→ Redness of the skin
→ Etcetera
These side effects sound scary but that shouldn’t mean you won’t wear it.
These are only potential side effects that could happen depending on your skin type or the chemicals in the sunscreen.
I can’t emphasize this enough:
It is really important to know the ingredients in the sunscreen you are using.
Conclusion
Do your research ladies.
& start wearing sunscreen everyday… EVEN in the fall and winter months.
